Combining data gives carriers new insights

"You can measure a lot, but you then have to know what you can do with that data. That's the crux," says Jillis Mani of InTraffic. Jillis Mani, Business Consultant at InTraffic, was interviewed by OVPro about how smart use of data benefits transportation operators.
Combining data
For example, combining data provides many new insights for transport operators. Carriers now receive a lot of information from vehicles and infrastructure. By establishing relationships between that data, it is possible to prevent breakdowns. "If you know that a system normally works a certain way, it can be an indication that something is going on if the system suddenly takes much longer." To do this, you also have to understand and apply data; only then will you know what you are measuring, Mani said.
Sharing data
Sharing data among carriers also provides new insights for carriers. This can be done, for example, by exchanging carrier data from NS with data from ProRail's infrastructure." Mani: "By making smart combinations, vehicles can help detect problems on the tracks and vice versa. For example, smart sensors in trains can measure that a piece of track is no longer straight, or a smart switch can report that it is broken and that it needs to be driven carefully."
BusVision 2018
Jillis Mani will give the workshop "Why measuring is not knowing" at BusVision 2018 on Oct. 11. During the workshop, Mani will discuss various use cases and visitors can also provide their own situations. "Then we can find out the right methods to tackle data combining and data sharing and prove that it really adds value," he said. "For that, we need to share experience."
