The Standard Transmission module (STM) links the existing Dutch Automatic Train Protection (ATB) to the new European Train Control System (ETCS) in the locomotive. STM-ATB enables safe, phased migration to ERTMS without direct fleet-wide conversion.

Maintaining safe driving during the transition to ERTMS

Transporters that switch to ERTMS are faced with a difficult task: trains must be able to continue to run safely on both ATB and ERTMS routes, without the entire fleet being converted in one go, costly and risky. STM-ATB offers a practical solution for this.

STM-ATB has been developed as on-board equipment that allows the existing Dutch ATB system to work together with an ETCS on-board system. The solution decodes ATB track signals, translates them into a maximum permitted speed and presents them to the operator via cab signalling. If the limit is exceeded, the system warns and intervenes automatically with a brake command via ETCS. By combining ATB-EG and ATB-Vv with ETCS functionality, trains can continue to run safely on ATB-equipped routes during the phased introduction of ERTMS. In this way, STM-ATB supports carriers, vehicle suppliers and infrastructure managers in a controlled transition to the new security system, while maintaining safety, availability and interoperability.
